fix: point the CLI to Sync from GitHub when none of your SSH keys are known yet - #1444
The CLI's "None of your SSH keys…" error now says to click Sync from GitHub on the profile settings instead of signing in, which someone already signed in has no reason to do again.
That button already re-syncs your SSH keys from GitHub right away (rate limited, with a toast), so it was only the error message sending people the wrong way.
The key lookup still only reads the database: it can't tell whose keys it's sent, and anyone can call it, so it shouldn't spend the GitHub quota.
CLI error
Before
…Add your key on GitHub (Settings → SSH and GPG keys), then sign in on https://dev-null.sh.
Tested in the app with GitHub returning a newly added key: the lookup answers 404 with the new message, then finds the key once Sync from GitHub is clicked.

Bug Fixes
When an SSH key isn’t recognized by GitHub, lookup now explains how to add the key to GitHub and sync it from the user profile.
SSH keys added to GitHub after sign-in become available for lookup after the profile is synced.
The CLI key-lookup denial message now directs users to sync SSH keys from GitHub in their profile. Feature tests check that a newly added GitHub key is unavailable before profile sync and available afterward.

Summary
CLI lookup guidance and sync coverage app/Http/Requests/CreateKeyLookupRequest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/Cli/KeyLookupControllerTest.php
The not-found message directs users to profile sync. Tests cover lookup before and after syncing a newly added GitHub key.
The PR provides a valid recovery path for newly added GitHub keys and verifies lookup before and after profile synchronization. No current-head merge-blocking risk was established.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to d65b3
The refresh remains scoped to the signed-in account and reuses existing key validation. No new impersonation path was established, but concurrent refresh behavior and shared GitHub capacity depend on runtime guarantees that were not available for review.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security Blast Radius
inferred — A signed-in caller can initiate refreshes for its own stored GitHub identity, not nominate another user or provider destination. Ordinary replacement affects that user's key mirror, while fingerprint conflicts can affect existing ownership and provider traffic consumes application-wide capacity. Both shared effects already existed through profile synchronization and sign-in.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The refresh route remains within the authenticated web group and obtains its principal through CurrentUser. The unauthenticated CLI lookup remains separately throttled and only reads fingerprint membership; it does not acquire GitHub authority. Synchronization resolves the current GitHub login from the stored account ID rather than trusting the local handle.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Transactional replacement protects each invocation, but it does not establish ordering between independently fetched snapshots. The new terminal producer can overlap existing sign-in, profile and authentication refreshes; no per-user execution lock or snapshot fence is expressed in the inspected job or updater. Whether this materially affects revocation depends on execution overlap, which remains unverified rather than a confirmed PR regression.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If concurrent refresh execution is supported, consider a shared per-user serialization or freshness-fencing policy across all producers, covering provider fetch through replacement and cache publication. This would strengthen the existing revocation invariant rather than remedy a verified PR-introduced vulnerability.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the terminal page now syncs a user's GitHub SSH keys, so the CLI can find keys added after sign-in. The raw summary and objectives confirm this is the primary change: TerminalController dispatches SyncGitHubSshKeysJob, the terminal tab disables prefetch, and the CLI error message points users to /settings/terminal. The title is a long single sentence, which is less concise than ideal, but it is accurate and specific.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1228 requires a CLI user to recover when a GitHub signing key is added after the initial web login. TerminalController::show dispatches SyncGitHubSshKeysJob for the signed-in user and limits dispatches to one per minute. CreateKeyLookupRequest directs the user to route('terminal.show') instead of requesting another sign-in. Feature tests cover the stale-key flow, the updated message, and the rate limit. The issue lists alternative fixes and does not require either suggested implementation verbatim.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within issue #1228. The terminal route and controller trigger the required key sync. The PageTabs override and the terminal tab's disabled prefetch ensure that opening the tab triggers the sync. The tests cover the endpoint behavior, sync flow, rate limit, and tab prefetch behavior. No unrelated change appears in the whole-PR diff.

When the limiter blocks a visit, the controller skips the sync without a message. The page then looks the same as a sync that ran. A user who follows the lookup guidance within the same minute can still see the CLI fail, and cannot tell that waiting will help.
The rate limit is intended and should stay. The change should expose the skipped state on the page, for example through a flash message or a prop that tells the user to try again in about a minute. Alternatively, the lookup message can add that a user who still gets this error should wait one minute and then reopen the page.

Update the show method so the page tells users when RateLimiter::attempt skips
SyncGitHubSshKeysJob, advising them to wait about a minute and reopen the page;
keep the existing rate limit in place and preserve the normal message when the
sync runs.
RateLimiter::attempt records the hit only after the dispatch callback returns. Two overlapping requests can therefore both pass the limit of 1 and queue SyncGitHubSshKeysJob within the same minute. Wrap this operation in a shared Cache::lock for the user, or use an atomic reservation before dispatching.

Serialize the rate-limit check and job dispatch in TerminalController::show so
overlapping requests for the same user cannot both queue SyncGitHubSshKeysJob.
Use a shared per-user Cache lock around RateLimiter::attempt, or an equivalent
atomic reservation, while preserving the one-per-minute limit.
Tell users that the key sync runs in the background.
Tell users that the key sync runs in the background.
TerminalController::show() queues SyncGitHubSshKeysJob and renders the page at once. With the repository's database queue setting, the job runs only after a queue worker processes it. A CLI retry sent right after the page opens can receive the same 404. The error text does not say that work is pending or that a retry may work after a short wait.

The existing assertSee substring in KeyLookupControllerTest.php:41 still matches with this change. The added sentence is only a message change, so it does not alter lookup behavior.

Update the denial message in the CreateKeyLookupRequest response to tell users
that key synchronization runs in the background and they should wait briefly
before retrying. Preserve the existing message and lookup behavior.

Keep the Sync from GitHub lookup message from dev-null-sh#1444. The visit still queues a key sync.
